A new era may be dawning for glamour queens.
To work in Hollywood or in other facets of the entertainment business once meant smiling, having pretty hair and mostly keeping silent on issues. Not anymore: Beauty and beliefs — including political and religious beliefs — can coexist surprisingly well, said Michelle Borquez, founder of Shine Magazine, a publication promoting “inner and outer beauty” in a woman’s life.
Take former supermodel Kathy Ireland, who is now the chief executive officer of a $1.4 billion company. She unabashedly says her faith guides her in everything she does and that it’s possible to be for women’s rights and also be pro-life.
Carrie Prejean, the former Miss California and Miss USA contestant who spoke out against gay marriage, says her future includes “me speaking out and taking a stand for what I believe in.”
Elisabeth Hasselbeck does just that five days a week on ABC’s “The View,” where talk on hot topics such as abortion, gun control and the war in Iraq can turn contentious as she responds to her more liberal co-hosts.
“I love the fact we are seeing glamorous women who have some moral absolutes and have families,” Ms. Borquez says. She cites the 2004 release of “The Passion of the Christ” as the turning point. Director Mel Gibson did not back down from his conservative Christian views, which paved the way for other high-profile people to do the same, she says.
“Before that, you might have been blackballed or known as being uptight,” she says.
Also helping conservative women speak their minds, even if they are not on the political stage, is Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin.
Mrs. Palin, who was runner-up in the 1984 Miss Alaska pageant, says she competed for the chance at scholarship money. Still, 25 years later, she is posing in Vogue and, like her or loathe her, she is “the sexiest and riskiest GOP brand,” according to Vanity Fair.
Mrs. Palin “is by far the best-looking woman ever to rise to such heights in national politics, the first indisputably fertile female to dare to dance with the big dogs,” Vanity Fair’s Todd Purdum writes in the August issue. “This phenomenal reality has been a blessing and a curse. It has captivated people who would never have given someone with Palin’s record a second glance if Palin had looked like Susan Boyle. And it has made others reluctant to give her a second chance because she looks like a beauty queen.”
Miss Ireland is most famous for modeling for Sports Ilustrated’s swimsuit issue 13 times, including three covers in the 1980s and 1990s. Today, she is the mother of three and CEO of Kathy Ireland Worldwide, a home-furnishings company. In her new book, “Real Solutions for Busy Moms: Your Guide to Success and Serenity,” she writes of the centrality of faith in her life.
“I would be a complete disaster without it,” she says. “For me, it is everything. Life and motherhood are challenging and sometimes scary. As moms, our responsibility to our families is to feel our fear, walk through it and do our best.”
She writes in the book about how she became a Christian when she was 18 and on a modeling assignment in France. Recalling how she picked up a Bible “out of boredom, jet lag and loneliness,” Miss Ireland says, “It really transformed my life. I knew I was holding the truth in my hands. A living faith in God is more than believing in him and going to church. It is an ongoing relationship that takes time.”
Miss Ireland, who lends her name to several causes, acknowledges that she may not have sent the right message in her modeling heyday. “I regret that a few times in my modeling career, I may have contributed to … messages [parents find objectionable],” she writes. “Today, as an older and wiser mom, there are a few photo shoots I wish I’d passed on. When you know better, you do better.”
Miss Ireland helps promote Tangle.com, a faith-based social-networking site where children and teens can post blogs, view videos and communicate in an environment that contains appropriate material. She also supports the Virginia-based Safe Surfin’ Foundation, which provides awareness and education about Internet predators.
“We live in an age of technology,” Miss Ireland says. “You can do every safety precaution in your home, but kids are going to be in other homes. We’ve got to educate and do everything in our power to keep them safe.”
Miss Ireland credits education for another recent change in her life. She says she has always been a passionate supporter of women’s rights, but she recently changed her views on abortion.
“I was pro-choice,” she says. “It wasn’t something I would ever choose for myself, but I felt, ‘Who am I to tell a woman what to do with her body?’ ” Miss Ireland says her revised approach is based on science, not faith.
“You can be an atheist and know it is not OK to take a life,” she says. “I dove into the medical books. I said, ‘Please show me some evidence that an unborn baby is not a human being.’ But there wasn’t any. I read everything I could get my hands on. I called Planned Parenthood. I talked to my pro-choice friends. Nothing. The moment life begins, there is a blueprint for DNA.
“Some people assume because I am pro-life I am anti-woman, but that could not be further from the truth,” she says.
Sarah Anne Sumpleoc of Fredericksburg, Va., who writes the blog Girls, God and the Good Life, says she thinks the culture may be heading to a time when conservative role models may not be such a rarity. She tries to write about role models on the blog often “because girls are looking for it.”
“Whether you are 13 or 30, we all look for role models,” she says. “We want to say, ‘I want to be like that.’ There are a whole lot of women doing amazing things, living what they believe and not afraid to show it.”

You might remember Karen Mulder as one of the Victoria Secret Angels from the late ’90s. She hasn’t been a model since 2000, but she has gone the way of Naomi Campbell by freaking out with her help!
Karen was just arrested in Paris after allegedly threatening to attack her plastic surgeon. Supposedly, the fallen angel was attempting get the female physician to reverse a former procedure. A detective said that Karen “began screaming and shouting about the operation and became extremely threatening. There were repeated calls to the female surgeon who was extremely scared.”
Well, yeah. We would be too if we had some crazy ho screaming in our ear.
Karen was promptly taken into custody this morning and is being kept in a cell in the eight arrondissement, the epi-centre of Paris haute couture.
How ironic!

Supermodel Karen Mulder has been arrested for making “threatening” phone calls to a plastic surgeon.
The 39-year-old star was questioned at a Paris police station after calling the medic and reportedly demanding for a previous operation to be reversed.
A detective said: “She was screaming and shouting about the operation and became extremely threatening. There were repeated calls to the female surgeon who was extremely scared. The suspect is being interviewed.”
Karen was arrested at about 10am yesterday (30.06.09) and taken to a station in the fashion district of the French capital city.
Another police source has claimed the model had been “stalking and making repeated violent telephone threats” to the surgeon.
The source added: “Miss Mulder was accompanied to a police station in Paris after a complaint was made against her.
“She is being interviewed by detectives and is expected to be released on bail.
“Her phone records are being checked. It is not yet known if any charges will be brought.”
Karen made her name in the 80s and 90s, and was paid ?10,000 for a day’s work at one point.
She gave up modeling in 1998 after saying she could no longer bear to be photographed.
In 2001, she claimed politicians and policemen had used her and others in her profession as sex slaves. She also falsely alleged she had been raped by Monaco’s Prince Albert.
She had depression and received treatment at a psychiatric hospital, then explained her problems were a result of an addiction to drugs when she was a model.
In 2002, she took an overdose of sleeping pills and was left in a coma.
She appeared on the catwalk in 2007 at a Christian Dior show alongside Naomi Campbell, Linda Evangelista, Stella Tennant and Helena Christensen.

The model, 32, has put on a stone after a 15-year career spent obsessing over her figure.
Wearing a lime green two-piece, she shows off her healthy-looking body in a photo shoot for Closer magazine.
Sophie has piled on the pounds in the past three months and says she is keen to accept her body for what it is.
She said: ‘I’ve finally realised you don’t need to be super-skinny to be a successful model. Look at Cindy Crawford - she’s got a gorgeous, healthy figure. Even Kate Moss has put on weight.’
Sophie, who had a highly publicised battle with drug addiction, added: ‘I survived for days on coffee and Red Bull. No wonder I got skinny!
‘My addiction and constant partying had a terrible effect on my body - I was just so unhealthy. But now I’m feeling good.’
Recent pictures showed Sophie with a slightly protruding tummy, but the model blamed the look on bloating.
She says: ‘My period was due and I always blow up like that - it’s just water retention. Before, I would have been devastated by a photo like that, but now I think it’s funny. I’m happy with my body, that’s the main thing.’
Sophie put weight on by eating larger portions. She also included foods such as white rice, oil, butter and cream.
Eventually she added a stone in weight, going up from 9st 7lbs, and a size 6 to an 8.
She said: ‘Now some people think I look “big’” when actually I’m normal. I like to look slim, but not skinny or gaunt - that’s never attractive.”

FRENCH police have detained Dutch supermodel Karen Mulder as they investigated a complaint she had harassed a cosmetic surgeon friend, police said.
The model was being held in a police station in the chic 8th arrondissement, or district, of Paris, the source said, adding she was suspected of harassing the doctor by telephone after the surgeon refused to carry out an operation.
The blonde has modelled clothes for Yves Saint-Laurent, Chanel, Valentino, and Versace.

Earlier this month, it was claimed Leonardo and Bar had split due to the actor’s reluctance to settle down.
A source said at the time: “They’re taking time off for the time being, they’ve split. It could just end up as a break, but for now they’re doing their own thing.
“She wanted to move faster than he did, she wanted to move in together, so he broke it off.”

Supermodel Kate Moss kicked off Virgin Atlantic’s 25th birthday celebrations by dressing as one of the airline’s flying pin-up girls.
Flashing her long legs in a red, strapless playsuit and Yves Saint Laurent Tribute platform heels, Kate jumped into the arms of a willing Sir Richard Branson as they posed on the wing of a Virgin jumbo.
The 35-year-old was aping the dress sense of the Virgin ‘Flying Girls’, who are painted on the side of the fleet in the style of Alberto Vargas’s pin-ups in the 1940s.


Kate followed in the unlikely footsteps of Pamela Anderson, who also dressed in a similar red playsuit for Virgin’s 21st birthday.
After their photoshoot this morning, Branson and Moss boarded the plane, entitled Birthday Girl, to recreate the airline’s inaugural flight from Heathrow to New York City.
On board today’s special VIP ‘birthday flight’ were international cricketer Kevin Pietersen, Sir Ian Botham and entertainer Christopher Biggins, who was a passenger on the very first Virgin Atlantic flight 25 years ago on June 22nd 1984.
Speaking before take-off, Sir Richard predicted that the recession would kill off first-class travel.
About an hour before departure, he posed in a captain’s uniform with Kate before being joined for the wing walk by his daughter Holly and his son Sam.
Sir Richard said the last 12 months in aviation had been ‘the most volatile in our 25-year history’.
He believed Virgin Atlantic would survive the downturn but suspected that first-class travel across all airlines would ‘disappear for good’.
Recent official figures have shown a massive slump in first and business class travel. As a result there is a vicious price war for business class customers. A return ticket to New York with Virgin Atlantic today costs ?1,098, compared with ?1,049 with American Airline United, and ?1,099 with Virgin’s arch-rivals British Airways.

Sir Richard, whose airline offers an ‘Upper Class’ premium service, said to sit between business and first, commented: ‘We have heard that our principal rivals are looking to get rid of first-class all together. And it’s high time. Who wants to spend ?8,000-9,000 on a first-class ticket when they can fly with us for less than half that.
‘I suspect first-class travel will disappear during this recession.’
Sir Richard, who has urged the government not to bail out ailing British Airways said his own airline was ‘doing better than most’ during the downturn.
‘This year is going to be tough for everybody. But it’s a fantastic time for passengers. I suspect they are getting the same sort of prices they were getting 25 years ago.’
When Virgin launched in 1984, a flight to New York cost ?119, compared with ?103 today. A Ford Fiesta was ?4,704 compared with ?9,995 today but a Motorola mobile phone, then a novelty cost a whopping ?1,750 compared to just ?9.50 today. The average house price in 1984 was ?32,751 compared with ?172,622 today.
Sir Richard said: ‘After looking in to price comparisons on typical goods we all buy, we realised that the fares we charged on flights to New York are nearly the same as 1984 when we started the airline.
‘I am so proud of what we have achieved in the last 25 years. It is a tribute to our staff.’
Virgin Atlantic chief executive Steve Ridgway said: ‘Today’s milestone is a huge accomplishment for Virgin Atlantic.’
Prime Minister Gordon Brown also sent a special birthday message praising the competition Virgin Atlantic had injected in to the market: ‘People can now afford to fly to places they previously only dreams of.
‘Aviation underpins our economic well-being. Virgin Atlantic is now also at the forefront of developing new technologies to meet the challenge of climate change. May this pioneering spirit continue throughout your second quarter century.’
Today’s special flight is under the command of Captain Geoff Andreason, Virgin Atlantic’s chief Boeing pilot.

JUST weeks after model Miranda Kerr stripped bare to ameliorate the plight of koalas, she has again appeared nude. And this time there’s no native fauna nearby.
The 26-year-old proved she can definitely leave her hat on, with a series of photographs from next year’s Pirelli Calendar becoming an instant Internet sensation.
The photographs were lifted from the latest edition of Italian Vanity Fair magazine, the Sunday Telegraph reports.
They document the making of the provocative 2010 calendar. There is also an accompanying video.
Kerr stars alongside fellow Australian models Abbey Lee Kershaw and Catherine McNeil in the shoot.
While much was made of Kerr’s nude Rolling Stone cover a fortnight ago, most of her modesty was strategically covered.
But not here.
While bare breasts are a staple of the sought-after calendar, the picture of McNeil is highly suggestive. The 20-year-old is photographed pouring milk over her breasts and body.
The 2010 calendar’s photographer, American Terry Richardson, has a dubious reputation for his overtly sexual work, often with teenagers.
Kathy Ward, of Chic Management - the trio’s Australian agency - said the shoot took place in Brazil two months ago. Ward said she was surprised the behind-the-scenes photographs had become such a sensation.
She said she had not spoken to the girls since they did the shoot.
“They’ve all been so busy overseas we haven’t really chatted but, from what I’ve heard, I believe the shoot went well,” she said.
“It’s interesting that the photos have come out.
“Usually there’s such tight security surrounding Pirelli that no images are revealed before the launch of the calendar.”
More photos from the shoot are expected to be released in November, prior to the calendar’s release.
The Pirelli Calendar is not for sale but is given as a corporate gift to a limited number of customers, clients and celebrities.

Her modelling career is going from strength to strength.
But it seems that Lily Cole is not just a pretty face, for the 21-year-old supermodel clearly has an IQ to match.
She has passed her first year at Cambridge University with flying colours after being awarded a first.
The red-headed Marks and Spencer star, who is studying History of Art, had her results pinned up on the noticeboard outside the university’s Senate House on Friday afternoon and was one of only three students who received the top grade.
It means that she scored an average of more than 70 per cent in her end of year exams.
If she repeats the feat in her final exams at the end of the third year, then she will be awarded a double first class degree.
The star will welcome the news after learning that she will not be having her contract with Marks and Spencer renewed as the retailer battles with the effects of the credit crunch.

It is a remarkable achievement for the star, who as well as modelling is also carving out a reputation as a respected actress.
Lily won a place a Cambridge University three years ago to study social and political sciences, but took two years off to concentrate on her modelling career.
She then switched to a three-year history of art degree.
Throughout the past year she has tried hard to balance the demands of being an internationally renowned model with the rigours of her studies.

While she has for the most part given up on the glitz and glamour of the catwalk, she seems unable to completely let go of her jet-set lifestyle.

‘Maybe the really hard part will be when I stop modelling and he stops footballing and we spend all our time together.’
The 29-year-old, who is currently in New York, is well-known within the modelling world.
Last year she starred in M&S’s Christmas advert alongside Myleene Klass, Lily Cole, Twiggy, Erin O’Connor and Take That.

Kate Moss finally got the chance to live out her rock star dreams last night - and managed to outdo the professionals.
Dressed in a sheer black jersey dress and killer heels, Kate writhed around on the floor with her microphone as she performed Summertime with Pink Floyd legend David Gilmour at a celebrity version of Britain’s Got Talent.
After her attempts to perform with her boyfriend Jamie Hince’s band The Kills were halted by his bandmate, the charity party gave Kate the opportunity to show them what they were missing.

The 35-year-old was supposed to be judging the karaoke contest alongside real X Factor judge Louis Walsh and Top Gear host Jeremy Clarkson, but clearly couldn’t resist the urge to steal the limelight and jumped on stage.
She was given the chance to fulfil her dreams when a guest bid ?47,000 to hear the model duet with the rock legend at the Hoping’s Got Talent event.
Artist Sam Taylor-Wood and Shane MacGowan were supposed to be the final celebrity duet of the night, with guests paying ?30,000 to hear the pair, but the crowd were desperate to David and Kate.
A guest said: ‘Everyone turned to Pink Floyd guitarist Dave Gilmour, chanting: “Dave, Dave, Dave!” When he stood up, everyone turned to Kate and started chanted her name.

‘The audience got more than they bargained for when the pair took to the stage - no-one could believe what was happening.
‘They played Summertime, and Kate really got into it. She dropped to her knees as she belted out the lyrics, and ended up writhing on her back. It was an electrifying performance.’
Throwing her song lyrics away, Kate put on a passionate performance as she sang on the floor at David’s feet. The model had been spotted drinking vodka with friend Sadie Frost earlier in the evening, no doubt providing some Dutch courage for her performance.
Kate’s boyfriend Jamie and friend Lily Allen opened the night by raising ?48,350 for their duet of Dream A Little Dream.
Other bids at the bash included ?10,000 for Madness star Suggs’s impersonation of Susan Boyle singing Me Old Bamboo, ?12,000 for MacGowan to paint a portrait in five minutes and Will Young’s ballet dance in a fat suit for ?8,000.
David Walliams also dressed as his Little Britain character Des Kaye and mocked Taylor-Wood’s teenage boyfriend Aaron Johnson.
Kate was hoping to perform at the gig with her boyfriend Jamie, but he reportedly refused, saying his bandmate would be furious.
After missing last year’s bash, which saw Gwyneth Paltrow duet with Bruce Forsyth, Kate has been taking singing lessons in preparation for the fundraiser.
While few would deny the Kate lives a rock ‘n’ roll lifestyle with her wild parties and edgy fashion choices, she is yet to be taken seriously as a musician.
Her latest attempt to enter the rock world is providing backing vocals for American band The Lemonheads’s cover of Dirty Robot, a track on their new album Varshons.
Her vocals appeared on ex-boyfriend Pete Doherty’s Babyshambles album track La Belle Et Le Bete and she was given songwriting credits on four tracks on the band’s second album Shooter’s Nation.
She also contributed vocals to Primal Scream’s 2003 song Some Velvet Morning.
A friend of the model said last year she wanted to concentrate more ’songwriting and being a singer’ after her modelling career comes to an end.
Kate isn’t the first model to attempt to crossover to music.
Naomi Campbell’s pop career faltered after her debut single Love & Tears charted at a dismal 75 in 1995, while American model Caprice Bourrett fared slightly better with her forgettable single Once Around The Sun in 2001, which hit no. 24.

The pair jetted back to London on Thursday afternoon after spending a few days holidaying together with Jamie at a friend’s private villa in the south of France.

The event raised over ?500,000 for the Hoping Foundation. Hoping stands for ‘Hope and Optimism for Palestinians In the Next Generation’ and aim to raise money for community projects involving children in Palestinian refugee camps.

Supermodel GISELE BUNDCHEN’s hunky husband TOM BRADY had to be rescued by a kayak instructor when a water adventure holiday turned dangerous earlier this week (begs15Jun09).
Brady and his new bride were splashing about on the Charles River in Massachusetts when the American football star’s rented craft capsized.
Rescuers were on hand to fish Brady out of the water safely, according to America’s Boston Herald newspaper.
A source tells the publication, “He had to be rescued. The launch guy went out and got him and got him back in the kayak. He’s been bragging about it ever since. He’s telling everyone he rescued Tom Brady.”
